Keeping them caged is not the solution!
To say, we live in a society that is supposed to treat men and women equally. However that seldom happens. Men once again continue to exercise unlimited freedom and women continue to rebel and demand equality in this so called egalitarian society. This scenario is quite prevalent in the colleges of India where girls have an early in time and a bunch of other strict rules, whereas guys can do anything they want and nobody bats an eye.
Girls are required to provide valid reasons for weekend night-outs in writing, wear clothes that are deemed appropriate by the authorities and are seldom allowed to stay out late. They’re also required to seek their parent’s permission to keep as a record every time they are leaving the campus. Boys on the other hand don’t even have an in-time. Girls have often protested that these rules have curtailed their free movement and are an infringement on their privacy. But these complaints have not been taken into consideration.
According to most of the colleges, these rules have been introduced with the view to strengthen security measures, as the country of late has witnessed a growing number of crimes against women. A lot of the parents agree with the institution’s worry but girls have been pretty agitated because of the regressive norms.
However it is a fact that putting the onus on women to protect themselves from harm is a subtle reinforcement of victim blaming and is further expected to backfire. Keeping them caged is not the solution.
The society needs to wake up to this cry for help. The situation is alarming. Women are being given stupid reasons like their own safety to keep them inside the house. That’s not a solution. It is in fact, the beginning of a new problem. The calamity is staring us right in the face.
If we don’t wake up to the facts now, it might just be too late.
